Match-Up of 3-0 Teams
This Sunday, Rex Ryan’s impressive New York Jets will travel to New
Orleans to face the best offense in the NFL in the Saints. The
Saints have been extremely impressive winning their first three
games by an average of 21 points. As for the Jets, their statistics
may not look as good but they deserve a lot of credit for pulling
away with the victory
against both the Patriots and the Titans.
Since 1983, only nine times did two 3-0 teams face off in week four.
Six of those nine teams, the team with the fewest points against in
the first three games came away with the win. Despite that we have
to give the edge to the Saints as home teams have won seven of nine
match-ups between 3-0 teams. Unfortunately there is very little data
when these teams face off to make an accurate prediction but one
thing is for sure, they are in very good shape for the rest of the
year.
Both of these teams are in excellent shape with a 70% chance to
reach 10 wins but which one has the edge? Since 1983, 110 teams had
three wins entering the fourth week of ones that averaged at least
32 points scored in their first three games, 7 of 22 made it to the
Super Bowl. On the other hand, if we look at teams that allowed 13
points or less in their first three games, only 9 of 45 made it to
the Super Bowl. It is however i nteresting
to note that teams with better defenses have a 10% better chance of
reaching ten wins. This means that after three games, teams with
better offenses (Saints, Ravens and Vikings) have a better chance of
making it all the way than teams with better defenses (Jets and
Broncos) but a smaller chance of making it to the playoffs.
Only time will tell how these teams perform for the rest of the year
but starting off 3-0 gives them a big edge over the rest of the
league. They average 1.8 more wins than 2-1 teams, have about twice
as many chances of reaching 11 wins and almost three times as many
to win the ultimate title.
